I'd be submitting more often...

Posted by Karco - August 13th, 2007

8-19-07 UPDATE: Two things, I'll start with the latest on my 3-step WIP. It's finished. It's been named. And right after this, I'll go submit it! And right after reading this, YOU will go listen to it if you haven't yet! ;D It was made for fun, with no intent of progress or original breakthroughs. Just for fun. Keep that in mind when listening to/reviewing it. ;)

Second thing is that school gets in for me tomorrow. Yeah, my insanely long summer comes back to kick me tomorrow. I won't be working on music nearly as much, nor will I be nearly as active on here. Don't worry, though, I will be whenever I get the chance. >:) Just a heads-up.

8-14-07 UPDATE: I've been finding it much easier and more fun to work on my 3-step project than on the others so I've been working on that one! It's actually almost finished - I just need to fix up some transitions and get that mixing/mastering just right, and it'll be on my audio page in no time. Stay tuned. ;D

I'd be submitting more often, but I've been finding it hard these days to finish a full song, let alone one I'm satisfied with enough to submit. Here, let me explain:

1) A couple times every week, these days, I come up with some GREAT inspiration for a song of some kind or another, be it trance, ambience, classical, some other thing... and, thanks to Nexus, which offers me a huge amount of resources, I can nearly make that inspiration a perfect reality. After so long being limited by my resources, I'm not anymore. So you'd think I'd be able to make plenty of songs, right?

2) Wrong. I begin working on my song and for a while, the inspiration comes so quickly I can barely keep up. But I do, and very quickly the song takes form. However, sooner or later, the inspiration comes to a screeching halt and I have no ideas of what to do. Usually I can't figure out where the song should go next, in terms of progression - and I ask people for their opinions. Thing is, as much as I like their ideas, it doesn't work. I'm standing here looking at a fifty-foot brick wall, and for each person that I ask for help, it doesn't help much more than taking one brick off of the top.

Now, you'd think, a collaboration would work quite well for this situation. I get inspiration for a song, I work on it until I lose it, then hand it off to my partner, and keep switching around. The collab partner would progress the song, and when I get it back I would have a reasonable idea of what to do next. Problem is, how many people do I know here who have Nexus? People here that I know: None. And, if I can't use Nexus, then making that inspiration a reality is much more difficult.

Thoughts, comments, suggestions?

Also, since I'm probably not going to submit anything for a while - though the first chance I get, I will, believe me - I may as well give you a list of what I've been working on lately. As well as links, I'll list their names(if they have one), their genres, and a short description. Comments, praise, criticism, etc. on ANY of these is more than welcome!

(Untitled) - Trance - The trance project I was talking about in my last news post. I've suspended this one until I get the experience I feel I need to work on this efficiently.

Ocean Depths - Trance - One of my more original trance songs which hopefully will use dissonance liberally.

Black Jungle - Dark Ambience - Well, I don't have too much to say about this one. It's dark, and it's ambient. The rest you'll have to figure out by listening to the song itself.

(Untitled) - Classical - A peaceful classical piece with strings, piano, and a harp. Not a serious song, in the sense that this was an experiment and I'm not intending to finish it. I'll likely be making little effort to add to it as is.

That's about it. Again, if you have anything to say about any of these, don't hesitate to say it!

I'd be submitting more often...

Don't you just like, wait until you have an idea on how to continue, if it NEVER comes again then you're just unlucky

why don't you just link the WIPs in the news post?

Yeah, that's what I do. And yeah, I'm unlucky. :\ Though it's a bit extreme to say it never comes again.

Linked 'em all, why don't you give them a listen? Comment on whatever you want to. All 5 if you're feeling generous. ;D

Untitled Trance song 1: I think I commented this one beefore. I remember the awesome bass. While you can't find more inpiration, work on your mastering on the drums- they sound pretty sharp and harsh

Ocean Depths: Reverb on pretty much everything? That would give the song a more ocean-like style... I don't know about this one... you always have piano in your stuff, a piano with some noticable compression would sound good

Untitled Trance Song 2: Holy shit that's a lot of Basshunter style in the bass (lol, oxymoron) Not much to say about this one, it's pretty awesome imo. But again, drums (particulary the kick) needs to be less sharp

My internet connection just turned way slow, the other two won't load. I'll comment them a bit later

Thanks for the comments! :)

(Untitled) Trance - Yeah, the drums are a big thing in this song. Remember in my last news post, when I said I have some difficult but ideal possibilities to work on? Most of them relate to the drums. (And glad you like the bass. I do too. Thank Nexus. :D)

Ocean Depths - Well, I named the song "Ocean Depths" because everyone was telling me the bleep every other measure sounded like some sort of radar or sonar or something. So I thought, "Hey, why not try to get the ocean style?" Reverb... not so sure, but I'll experiment. Actually, I think piano might work - but I think I'll need to get a piano that sounds just right, and then some awesome composition for it - otherwise, it might sound unnecessary.

(Untitled) 3-Step - Yeah, I was feeling lazy when I made the bass, so that's what I did. :D Glad you like it, I'll give the drums a look right now.

That's fine, take your time. :)

Black Jungle- I love the noise percussion you have in here. now add some even faster, thinner sounds with a bit of panning and swift delay, and you have a nice chaotic IDM percussion part... or you could add a heavy, hard beat at a very low volume to make it scarier. Keep the dark style, continue with the drones and sweeps until you have 3/4 minutes of ambience and add on with some weird synth.

Untitled Classical song- this song could use calm classical drummage. I don't have much moree to comment as it's just a very few bars long

Black Jungle - Not too much to comment on here but the suggestions sound pretty good. The heavy, hard beat, especially, I never considered that one. :D

(Untitled) Classical - Drums? I have a few ideas, I can see how those'd work. Problem is, I have HORRIBLE realistic drum samples, I still have to invest in those... oh, and it's 32 measures. :P

Thanks for the comments! :)

UNTITLED 1: So i backspaced and my whole comment for this song was lost...here we go again. Drums are good needs mastering like SBB says. I'm loving the reverse kick I love that too =D. Gotta ask did you get any of these drum ideas from me? Honored if you did. The bass line is fantastic! Now take the filter off or get a fat bass synth in there and turn it up so the people listening to need to strain to hear it. All the musical notes are dwarfed by the drums.

OCEAN DEPTHS: Okay radar FX volume needs to go down. That crash is pretty powerful too be careful with that guy. Nice arp but I think what you should do to progress the song would to maybe take that arp and put it into a chord progression. Your orchestral thing you got could be the transition into that chord progression. Nice piece though.

3 STEP: Nice I love this kinda stuff =D Your melody is uber soft BRING IT UP. Maybe its just my speakers...But alot of your WIPs here are back in the volume department. I THINK your melody is good. yout bass and drums are definately good. Like the snare stuff. And the filter in the beginning. I love 3-step so good work.

Black Jungle: Ooh Spooky. Nice FX and apropriate name for the song. Wow lots of work on your drums in this one? Nice filter work. Introduce a bass synth other then the pad because it feels a little treble-y (too much high end) Thats all for this bravo with the drums.

Classical: Alright well you arent serious about this one...umm I like it. More strings would be nice (longer notes) but cool. so yeah like the melody of the harp and not much else.

Well I did submit that song *Rave-a-thon*. Check it out :P and good luck with your progess in the WIP world.

-Drumr

Hey, Drumr. :) I'm tired, it's late where I'm at, so I doubt I'll have too much to say. I'll come back to this in the morning to see if I have anything else to add. Here's what I can come up with right now, though...

(Untitled) Trance - Well, I can't say I had you in mind when I made those drums but it could have been a subconscious thing, considering this is the first time I've used a reversed kick in a song that'll hopefully be finished sooner or later. :P Hmm... you're talking about the drums needing mastering. I've been working so hard on getting other parts to sound right, so I guess I need to pay volumes some attention, too. :P It's especially important when suggested by two people... glad you like the bassline, I like it too. :D

Ocean Depths - Hmm, seems you're thinking the hits I'm using - radar, crash - are a bit loud. Odd, they sound just fine to me. The crash is meant to be a bit powerful... woah, what? I'm listening to it right now where I uploaded it, I think I uploaded the wrong file! XD The part where it goes crazy and a buncha things disappear before it gets back on track wasn't supposed to happen... :P The orchestral thing is planned to be the transition, right now I'm trying to think of that chord progression. I'm trying to get it to be AWESOME - lots of dissonance, yet it sounds awesome. The finished song, once it's hopefully finished, will be something to look forward to... >:)

(Untitled) 3-Step: Ha, glad you like it, this was definitely one of the more fun ones in this list to make. Maybe even the most fun. :D The melody... I agree it's soft, but not quite uber soft. Considering it's a sawtooth, maybe I should go make it obnoxiously loud, but not overpowering? XD Aah, maybe, but I'll definitely experiment with volumes, I agree it's a bit quiet. Hmm, by back in the volume department, you mean quiet? I don't think I agree, really. Probably just your speakers? I've compared it to another song or two on iTunes and it's not much quieter or louder. Anyway, not much else to comment on... onto the next song! >:D

Black Jungle - Yep, spooky. Actually... psst. The drums? A Nexus Preset. All the work went into choosing them. XD And that pad is played waaaaaaaaaay down at C2, and is surprisingly good down there. Most pads explode when played that low. :D

(Untitled) Classical - Hmm, longer notes just might work! It's not a serious thing but if it were, that would be the way to progress it. When I feel like it, I'll experiment.

Lots'a comments, Drumr! :D And I've had a lot to say in return, more than I thought I would have to say. :) I'll check out your song right now, I'll rate it, too - I don't think I'll have the time or energy to review it until tomorrow, though. Thanks for stopping by and commenting! :)
